The lead of NeTroDisOH in the framework of a Coimbra Group Scholarship has received practical hands-on training on metagenomics and bioinformatics from the Laboratory of Viral Metagenomics, led by Prof. Jelle Matthijnssens. The Laboratory of Viral Metagenomics is part of the Clinical and Epidemiological Virology division of the Rega Institute at KU Leuven, Belgium studying the viral component of microbiomes as a whole using shotgun-based metagenomics approaches. They fully optimized a sample treatment procedure to efficiently purify viral particles for viral metagenomics (NetoVIR) which they use in various studies. Dr. Otabil during his research stay in the Jelle Lab received training and used this training to study the microbiome of Onchocerca volvulus worms.
